Five Things I wish Someone told me when I first started Writing in 2018.

1. Get a blog.  I really wish I had started a blog very early, it would have been a different story by now. It's never too late to start because the best time to plant a tree was 20yrs ago, the second best time is now! See, the advantages of having a blog is so beautiful. Just go and find out and let's talk.  2. As you release a book, partner with bookstores beforehand.  This idea is amazing. If you're an author who has had paper back to his/her credit, why don't you have an affiliation with major bookstores like Rovingheights in Lagos/Abuja.  There are other bookstores you can research on and see what percentages fit you. I usually tell newbie authors to leave money and build influence. In time, money will come, but let's face the main thing.  3. Attend live trainings/workshops/seminars on writing.  Now that I want to do more of going out and sitting with other geniuses in my field, I am limited. Trust me, it's harder to do this as a young married woman wi...

The Unspoken Challenges of Teaching Sign Language: A Heartwarming Story

Image
As a sign linguist, I've encountered numerous challenges while teaching special students. Today's experience reminded me of the importance of empathy and understanding at all time. While signing for my students during a church service, one of them expressed frustration, claiming she wasn't understanding. Her behavior caught me off guard, but I remained calm, recognizing the importance of maintaining a positive learning environment. The Power of Sign Language in Inclusive Education Sign language is more than just a means of communication; it's a bridge between worlds. My students, who are deaf or hard of hearing, rely on sign language to access information and connect with me and their peers. Challenges Faced by Sign Language Teachers 1. Communication barriers 2. Negative attitudes and behaviors 3. Limited resources and support 4. Maintaining student engagement The Lessons I Learned: 1. Stay calm and patient, even in challenging situations. 2. Foster empathy and unders...

How Parents can Foster a Love for Reading in their Children.

Growing up, my father's bookshelves were my sanctuary. Little did I know, they would shape my future and inspire me to become a lifelong learner.  If I ever have a spot in my father's room today, it'd be his bookshelves.  He has three.  An extra portmanteau for storing books/record files.  I love books.  I am attracted to good and valuable books.  As strict as my father was during my early years, he gave me that space that I actually WANTED.  It's always Ometere going to the table/shelf to pick his newspaper.  It's always Ometere borrowing story books/novels from neighbors, friends and classmates.  It's always Ometere keeping a diary in unusual places in the house.  It's always Ometere giving my dad book lists that are out of our school curriculum, guess what? He would buy it. And he would buy ALL! It's always Ometere creating and keeping a a mini bookshelf in her wardrobe and when she got married, the mini bookshelf moved with her....

If Life couldn't drown me, what else would?

A fanciful afternoon because I could afford a sachet of powdered milk for my garri. The day may likely end well if Mr. Ola remembers me and pay his debt of N3,600. I picked up my phone and attempted to scroll through Instagram, when I received a notification bell, it was from Sekinat- my padi from NYSC days. She had just mentioned me in a comment section. As I look through the newsfeed, I saw this person posted about wanting someone that could capture her introduction ceremony in Ikotun, quickly I hopped on her page. Sekinat’s comment was the lengthiest and as always, she stood for me.   Only that this time around, the client gave me the offer because Sekinat is her relative and not because of what I could do. That client got to be the fourth person that would almost make me quit my photography job in the past four months.   How can I foot my tfare and still receive 70% payment at the end of work? What happened to my 30%? Even Sekinat couldn’t help me this time!...
