How Parents can Foster a Love for Reading in their Children.

Growing up, my father's bookshelves were my sanctuary. Little did I know, they would shape my future and inspire me to become a lifelong learner.

If I ever have a spot in my father's room today, it'd be his bookshelves.

He has three.

An extra portmanteau for storing books/record files.

I love books.

I am attracted to good and valuable books.

As strict as my father was during my early years, he gave me that space that I actually WANTED.

It's always Ometere going to the table/shelf to pick his newspaper.

It's always Ometere borrowing story books/novels from neighbors, friends and classmates.

It's always Ometere keeping a diary in unusual places in the house.

It's always Ometere giving my dad book lists that are out of our school curriculum, guess what? He would buy it. And he would buy ALL!

It's always Ometere creating and keeping a a mini bookshelf in her wardrobe and when she got married, the mini bookshelf moved with her.

I am here today by the special grace of God.

...by my dad's efforts.

...by my own dedication.

So dear parents, when you see that your baby holding a book to read today, spread it well for him/her.

You never can tell if that will be the red carpet for your child in future.

Here are five (5) Lessons for parents to glean from my story.
1. Create a reading-rich environment by making books accessible and inviting.
2. Encourage exploration by allowing your child discover genres and authors.
3. Support their interests by buying books that align with their passions.
4. Read together, it feels wholesome when you share nuggets and idea together.
5. Make reading fun by using stories, exciting games and audiobooks.
